Initial Research - Anya Kholina

Anya Kholina was born in Moscow, Russia and she works as Fine Arts, People and Lifestyle Photographer. Mostly focused on a portraits she has a passion shooting on film but also she can works in other fields of photography.

She came from a very conservative background and both of her parents are lawyers. She went to law school but she realised that she was not interested in this. But she graduated from University from her parents insistence. 'After that she started a course in Graphic Design and Illustration. During design education I always integrated photos into my graphic works and the final (graduation) project was a collaboration with a fashion designer.'

Nowadays she does reportage, food, interiors and still life. But her passion is people. 'A pretty funny thing is that I have always considered myself an introvert but at the same time I love taking pictures of people.'

She considers herself introvert but at the same time she loves take pictures of people. "People inspire me. How they look, their style and their mannerism."

She is a visual person and she sees fashion as a visualisation of our inner selfs.  She believes that fashion is a big tool to tell a story. When it comes to inspiration she says something interesting that I do like to share it here. "Frankly, I'm doing nothing for this. Inspiration comes from things and people that surround me, just surround yourself with the right components. Networking also helps. If things are really bad, then the best way is to go on a trip."

During the lockdown she started to make a series of portraits of people parted their hair. That kind of photography it is very different, exciting and it is very interesting for me. Photography that people in general are not used to see. With different elements and subjects. Exploring more than a beautiful face she adds different things to her pictures.

Thanks to quarantine she can take pictures online from anywhere. That is something that I want to explore. A new technique that others artists could not use in the past.

I have looked into Anya Kholina work and to her subjects that she uses to bring emotion and reality into her pictures. The balance, light and composition is something that captivate me.

Smart Objective - DIVERSITY

I will be creating a series of images where I will show DIVERSITY. I will use primarily images for this project, and I want to explore the reality of life. Different poses, exploring expressions, working with different light, different backgrounds but never forgetting the main point of this project: DIVERSITY.

For this project, I will look for people around Leicester, primarily focused on the campus and introduce them to my idea to get some people to take some pictures. Hope this goes well, especially with the COVID-19 circumstances.      I can do it at the studio or outdoor.

I will use my Canon 1200D or my iPhone. I will also reach AV Loans to access different material as soon I have everything planned and discussed with my tutor on the 28th of October.

I like to impress and generate discussion about my pictures. It will be my point of view. It will be my Art with all of my heart.

Find below some pictures I took a couple of years ago that I will use as a starting idea for you to understand what kind of Art I will be doing.

Final Project - Concept

In this project I will explore DIVERSITY as a main topic. I started my research with Anya Kholina, she is a Russian working in Fine Arts, People and Lifestyle Photographer. I love people and diversity and that is what I want to show in this project. I want to explore expressions, colours and textures. I want to bring some emotion into my pictures and also add some details such a colourful outfit or simply white in black depending on person characteristics.
Find below my Milanote link and a screenshot from the work I have done so far. This will be updated with new information often.

Advert - Final Piece

The main difficulties I have found was to find an advert that I could use a picture that I took but also sketch booking the idea. As soon I had the idea in my mind clearly I started writing down and then I used the website Pixler to put all my ideas together.

At the end of the two sessions I had I completely understand the rules such as design, layout, the text and image and methods to get people attention.

I can say that after this exercise I can create some things in the future with more confidence and knowledge that my tutor has passed into me.

Create an advertisement - Week 2

For this week's task I had to create an advert selling a product, service or awareness campaign.

The reason why I have decided to create this advert it is because I have traveled to this place, Chamonix - Mont Blanc, a few times and was a place that I imagine living in the future. The reason why I decided to create an advert based in winter holidays was mostly to inspire people to travel. I can say also that the picture is an original that I took while there.

My main inspiration came from different adverts from the 70s that

Please find below some of the pictures that I took while was there.

I had an introduction in advert rules to create a balanced and credible advert that could catch people eyes.

My main target it will be people who loves winter holidays in places that can be exclusive, but this time it can be accessible to most people with discounts up to 70%. I did not reveal many information because I want for the people to go and search for the town as I did in the past. It has some mysteriousness but the picture says many things.

The colours I have chosen they are part of the French flag. We can see the blue sky, the white and some red in the advert.

See below the contact sheet from screenshots that I took trough the process. It took me some time to understand how I could make the advert works.

Duane Michaels - Photographer

Duane Michaels is an American photographer born in February 18, 1932, distinguished by his sequential images exploring areas such as myths and mysteries. From a very early age he showed interests in the Arts. He went to Carnagie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before go to University of Denver, Colorado.

He also studied Graphic Design at Parsons School of Design before he became a photographer, in 1958.
He started travelling to Soviet Union and taking pictures of people in the street with a borrowed camera. In his return to America he worked as a freelance doing fashion photography and portraits. We can see some of his work on Vogue, Mademoiselle and Life magazines.

Over the years his point of view has changed substantially. His first approach in street happenings led him to make single documentary single images called the "social landscape" but later he lost the interest in this. Inspired by other artist, such as,  RenĂ© Magritte and Balthus, Michaels began to express literary and philosophical ideas about death, gender and sexuality.

Second Exercise of Sequential Images

The second exercise of sequential images and I have choose take pictures of myself while packing my bag for the day. I choose to put these images in black and white because was many different colors in the space and I want for the people seeing this to be able to focus on the main action. The light in the space that day was very helpful for the exercise and I could do it easy without moving around to find the perfect spot for the photo shoot. It took me around 20min to have this completed as I had some issues with the right angle but in the end I was happy with the final result. Looking into this pictures now I could change some things, for example, I could focus more in the bag where the action is but also moving to a space where the background does not have many details as you can see in the pictures. Definitely in the future if I have to do something similar I will choose a minimal space to do it. I took these pictures with my Iphone and was not easy to stand this to take the pictures but I managed to find the right. I want to explore the technique of sequential image, this time I did with myself but I want to have someone as a model helping with similar projects in the future.

Sequential Images

This is the first time that I create a Sequential Image and this exercise can gave us an idea of movement or action trough images. The process was easy for a staged first piece of sequential images but can be more difficult if we want to have more detail in our work or go for unstaged moment. For this exercise the Iphone 13 PRO Max was the main camera with the wide lens but I'll explore different lens and also try it with a DSLR camera with different lens. I want to explore light, angle and different actions. The first thing I had in mind using two different things, the young guy and a orange that gave us two different moments. Also I had in mind the contrast between the blue sky and the orange to make sure we could see this. The idea of jumping from the bench gave us a feeling The final result is quite good but I want to explore different techniques and situations that can gave us more interaction. In this image we can see an young guy throwing a orange in the air while jumping foward from a bench.
